Letters to Leonard

Hey,
I just wanted to inform everyone of one thing that NHS is doing to give back in another part of the world. Also, this is an opportunity for you to get rid of a demerit if you so choose.

This is Leonard. He lives in Cameroon in North Western Africa. Through Plan USA, NHS sponsers Leonard and his family. With our donations, Leonard is able to attend school, learn about health and hygeine from Plan USA workers in Cameroon, and get necessary supplies like mosquito netting. Also, his parents, who are both peasant farmers, recieve training to make their farming more efficient and earth-friendly.
Leonard speaks a language called Bakoum and lives in the Paki community of Cameroon. He is Christian and celebrates Christmas as well as other Chirstian holidays. He enjoys playing soccer with his friends. Leonard is 14 years old. His birthday is October 13, 1995.
Leonard is currently attending a secondary school 5 km away from his home. It takes him approx. 45 minutes to get to school every day. He lives with his parents Ferdinand and Pelagie and his younger sister Gulene on their family farm. The family gets their water supply from nearby water sources like rivers and streams and the nearest health facility is about 45 minutes away.
Some of the money NHS raises through fundraisers goes towards our yearly donation to help Leonard and his family. If you would like to earn back demerits, you can write letters to Leonard. If you are interested, please talk to Morinville for more information.
Thank you!

November Meeting 11/11/09

Hey everyone,
This is just a reminder of what we covered at last week's meeting. Please email me at leejamiller@gmail.com if you have any questions at all. Also, check the attendance lists to see if you have any demerits. The list for poinsettia sales should be going up soon. Thanks!

REMINDER: TUESDAY NOVEMBER 24TH is the pickup day for poinsettias. November committee, you are needed to help sort the poinsettias in the guidance area of the office during the morning of the 24th. If you have free periods/study halls, please let Morinville or myself know when you will be helping. I'm assuming you can get a pass from Morinville if one is needed.
Those of you who aren't in November committee, please come RIGHT AWAY after school to pick your poinsettias up. We'd like to get the plants out of the office's way as quickly as possible, so your promptness after school would be very helpful.

Also, THANK YOU to those of you who volunteered to help Sharon Thayler at the Gillespie Center, I hope everything went well. This makes up for one of your demerits or will make up for one in the future if you don't have one right now.

If you have not yet signed up for a volunteer time at the ice rink for December, please do so ASAP, the sign up is on the bulletin board outside of Cordie's room. Also, there are extra time slots open. If you need to make up demerits, please sign up for an extra time slot, fill out a make up sheet and turn it into Cordie, Morinville, or any of the NHS officers.
There was some confusion as to which month is responsible for the ice rink. The ice rink will be an event for December, January, and February. However, each of these committees still needs to come up with another event on top of the ice rink, preferably an event that involves the entirety of NHS at one time. February will be promoting one night where kids from the whole school can come and ice skate and NHS can possibly sell hot coco or apple cider at the event to raise funds. So, your additional event can be related to the ice rink, or it can be something completely different. If you have any ideas, please talk to your committee chair.

Thank you to everyone who attended this month's meeting and I will see you next month. The board meeting is on Wednesday DECEMBER 2. The large group meeting is on Wednesday DECEMBER 9.

Poinsettias EMERGENCY MEETING

ATTENTION ALL NHS MEMBERS:
There is an emergency meeting THIS MONDAY (Oct. 25) in MORINVILLE'S ROOM at 7:15. You will just be receiving your packet of information on poinsettia sales. You must sell 10 by NOVEMBER 2ND or else you will recieve a demerit. The money raised will go towards scholarships for NHS members. Be sure to come pick up your packets AT 7:15 on Monday as you will only have a week to meet the sales requirement. You can go to Shirley Hills, Hill Top, or ask teachers at MWHS to meet that requirement, as well as contact family members and friends. The poinsettias will be available before Thanksgiving so you will be able to hand them out to your family then.
Thanks for understanding!

October Meeting (10/21)

Hey guys,
Thank you to everyone who showed up today, I think we had a productive meeting.
Congratulations to Dan Flesher and Andrew Alness, our new Treasurer and VP! Remember you two must now be at every board meeting on the first Wednesday of every month, plus the regular meetings. Your next meeting is NOVEMBER 4TH in Morinville's room.

What we covered:

  • A guest speaker from the outdoor ice rink by Shirley Hills came to speak to us about volunteer opportunities at the rink. He needs a few kids to work shifts, especially during the winter break, in the warming house. Your job would simply be to moniter the kids skating and make sure everything runs smoothly.
  • Ms. Wallace also spoke to us about volunteering at the Hill Top October Fest. She handed around a sign up sheet at the meeting but if you did not get the chance to sign up and you would like to, contact her ASAP because the October Fest is THIS SATURDAY.
  • Voted for Treasurer and VP. Congrats Dan and Andrew!
  • Handed out NHS bylaws. If you have not already done so, please read through these, sign them, and get them into Morinville or Cordie by NEXT FRIDAY. If you do not get it in it will count as a demerit. If you did not get one, there should be some on the NHS board next to Cordie's room.
  • Broke into committees. The committee lists are posted below. If you did not get onto a committee, please contact me either at school, on this blog, or through email at leejamiller@gmail.com to get your name on one of the lists. REMINDER TO ALL CHAIRS: You will be expected to attend every monthly board meeting in addition to the regular meetings. Your next meeting is NOVEMBER 4TH in Morinville's room.

Check the attendence link to see how your attendence standings are. If you missed this meeting or the last one, BE SURE to make it up. You can make it up by helping out with the October Fest, or by writing a letter to Leonard, whom we will be talking about during the next meeting on NOVEMBER 11TH. During the next meeting we will also be talking about other ways in which you can make up points.

Junior Meeting (10/7)

Hey guys!
Our first meeting of the year is just with the junior class members to go over the upcoming school year and get you used to being in NHS.

Topics Covered:
  • Welcome to NHS!
  • What is NHS?
    • We aim to promote volunteerism within the community and make Mound a better place. We break into 7 committees, one for each remaining month of the school year. Each comittee has one chair (must be a senior) and does the planning for their month's event. Everyone must attend all events.
  • Expectations
    • be present and on time to every event, uphold the NHS name, don't make bad desicions, they are not tolerated in NHS.
  • VP and Treasurer
    • for those of you who missed, please see the NHS board (outside of Cordie's room) for the VP and Treas. job descriptions. If you would like to run for one of these positions, prepare a short (2 min) speech describing why you would be good for the role and be ready to speak on the 21st!
  • Poinsettia Sales (keep an eye out for more info on NHS board)
There were many of you missing at this morning's meeting. That means you now have a demerit and you need to make that up! We will be going over ways in which you can make that meeting up at our next meeting on OCTOBER 21, thats the first Wednesday after we get back from MEA at 7:10. DO NOT be late! Two demerits and you're out of NHS.
Check the attendence list to make sure you've been present at every meeting this year!

New School Year!

Hey,

Welcome to the MWHS NHS blog! I hope that you are as excited as I am for this brand new school year. I think we're going to get a lot done together in this group. This blog is just one of the new additions and developments to our NHS chapter.

This blog was created for many reasons. One of those reasons is communication. I could make all of the Facebook groups I wanted to, but those are still not going to be accessible for all of our members. So, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to stay updated, this blog was created. With this blog, you will be able to check on events coming up on the interactive calendar. You will also be able to check whether or not you missed a meeting or event that you need to make up for. This will be possible with the links I will post monthly which will take you directly to an Excel spreadsheet with your name and all of the events for the month listed. Also, with this blog you can stay on top of what we went over in every meeting, in case there was a subject you missed or wanted to see more information on.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything NHS related, please leave a comment on this blog or e-mail me at leejamiller@gmail.com.

See you at the first meeting of the year!
